Taking Pearson+ Channels to mobile for 1.5M students
Channels helps students understand hard subjects through short videos and practice. I designed its first native mobile experience and the AI features inside it.
Context
Pearson+ is Pearson’s study platform for students. Channels, part of Pearson+, uses short-form video and adaptive practice to explain complex academic concepts to over 1.5M active users.
The problem
Channels worked well on the web, but there was no native mobile app.
Students study on the go, and we wanted personalized AI tools to keep them engaged there. That meant designing the mobile experience from scratch while redesigning Study Prep around new AI features.
My role
I owned the UX strategy for Channels on mobile and its AI features, and led alignment between product and engineering.
- Designed the Exam Prep mobile app end to end
- Designed the entry points and flows for the AI Tutor and Adaptive Practice
- Improved onboarding and the core learning flow
- Planned around engineering constraints early, so the built product matched the designs
Process
The decisions that made the difference.
Start mobile from a blank page
We designed the Exam Prep app end to end for the phone, including onboarding and the core learning flow, instead of shrinking the website.
Put AI where students get stuck
The AI Tutor and Adaptive Practice sit inside the study flow. Adaptive Practice creates flashcards, practice and milestones based on each student’s performance.
Design with engineering limits in mind
By planning around data and technical limits from the start, the front end matched the designs with over 95% accuracy and very little rework.
